MOVING INTO DANCE MOPHATONG

MIDM's Performance Company presents Afrofusion, a unique amalgamation of both indigenous and contemporary cross-cultural South African dance, music and ritual with Western contemporary dance forms. Their extensive repertoire includes works by award-winning South African choreographers, Vincent Sekwati Mantsoe, Gregory Vuyani Maqoma and Sylvia Magogo Glasser. The repertoire is rooted in African rituals and art forms, narratives past and present, and is characterised by its sheer physical beauty and spiritual expressiveness.

Dane was invited by Artistic Director, Mark Hawkins, and spent four days working with MIDM in Johannesburg after an initial introduction set up by ex-Royal Ballet director, Monica Mason and David Neville from Dancing for the Children charity. The company provided the opportunity to work with all the professional company dancers as well as 2nd and 3rd year trainees. We created a short 14 min choreography spread over three movements of music having researched different movement ideas and structures of solos, duets, trios and ensemble work. The four sessions lasted 2hrs30mins each and ended with a sharing of work at the end of the week.

We look forward to continuing our work with MIDM in future and are in talks for new possibilities in 2016/2017.

DANCER FEEDBACK

Working with Dane was one of the most amazing moments of my dance career. Working with him was not difficult because he is a person who has patience. The way he moves was not difficult for me because of training I have received from MIDM.  We hope to work with him again.

“The process of working with Dane was very lovely and it was a great experience. I learnt a lot from him and I also think he learnt a lot from us as well. I would love to work with him in the future as I liked the way that he works and also the kind of technique that he was using.”

Eugene Mashiane, Junior Company Member

“My experience with Dane Hurst was phenomenal, very challenging and inspirational in a manner that makes one to be on the edge and be able to think creativity on the spot. As an aspiring choreographer it was very helpful and I wish we could do this again for a longer period of time. Dane Hurst is an amazing person; teacher, dancer and choreographer. I really hope to work with him again in the future.” Teresa Mojela, Junior Company Member
